Deadline Approaching: TREE Power Program Seeking Applicants

Qualifying organizations can receive up to $15,000 to plant trees in public spaces

Snohomish County PUD is accepting applications for the second round of funding of its TREE Power program through Monday, June 10.

The Tree Relief for Energy Efficiency Power program provides funding for tree-planting projects in public spaces and urban areas. The goal of these projects is to promote energy efficiency by reducing the heat retention of buildings and pavement and, ultimately, lessen the need for air conditioning. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, trees can reduce the ambient temperature of an area by 2 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit due to the shade they create.

The program returns after a successful pilot launch last year. Three grants were awarded to the cities of Arlington, Everett and Mukilteo. Project funding ranges from $7,500 to $15,000 and covers the cost of trees, staking and structural supports, mulch, watering bags, labor and maintenance.

“This program is a great way to increase energy efficiency, while also improving the visual appeal of our neighborhoods,” said John Hoffman, PUD Chief Customer Officer. “It’s no secret that summer cooling demand continues to rise, and the TREE Power program is a natural way to help reduce energy usage for generations. Plus, everyone loves trees!”

The awards are from a grant supplied by the American Public Power Association for the sole purpose of planting trees in public areas throughout the PUD’s service territory. Funding is available for government, quasi-government and non-profit organizations, and public agencies for tree planting on publicly accessible land.
