Our FlexEnergy pilots rewarded customers who had agreed to change their behavior or employ home technology to save energy when demand on the grid is the greatest. The project has been completed and is now closed.

Why the pilot programs?
To meet goals for clean, sustainable energy and low customer rates, the PUD is studying how to meet peak energy demands as efficiently as possible. Energy peaks – or when power demand is at its greatest – usually occur from 7 to 10 am and 5 to 8 pm. These peaks put a strain on the grid especially during winter months, and can result in the utility purchasing energy that is more expensive and not from renewable, clean sources.
Our FlexEnergy pilots will help us learn about customer flexibility, adoption of new rate designs, and how shifting usage from peak to off-peak hours can help ease future energy demands. Participants are helping us keep power reliable, affordable and environmentally sustainable.
Program Updates:
- FlexEnergy’s first year is in the books and we have seen huge success. During the winter season, FlexEnergy customers shifted a total of 43 megawatt hours of energy. Click here for a summary of the program’s first winter season. Thank you to all participants for helping us learn so much.
- Year 2 of the program kicked off July 1. One important change in the second year of the program is the absence of the winter bill credits. The PUD has decided to continue the break-even guarantee in Year 2, allowing participants to take part in the program risk-free.
