Some customers have asked us whether their PUD meter is accurate. Do they ever malfunction and customers get a bigger bill than they should?
Rest assured that when we buy meters, our manufacturers provide a certified meter accuracy test for each meter. Like other utilities around the country, our meters operate in compliance with the American National Standards Institute.
And as an added safeguard for our customers, we pull a sample of meters every five years and perform a series of accuracy tests. If we detect any problems, we’ll pull additional meters of the same model and age and do additional tests.
Virtually all of our meters operate the way they’re designed. And those with problems are typically meters that actually run a little slower due to age. These meters, on average, run slower at 98 percent or less of actual usage, meaning some customers may be slightly under-billed.
Regardless, we want to make sure we address our customers’ meter questions. If you think a meter may be inaccurate, you can ask us for a meter check, available free every three years. We check up to 2,000 customer meters each year. Customers with questions should contact PUD Customer Service at 425-783-1000 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding holidays, toll-free outside the Everett local calling area at 1-877-783-1000).
