SmartCharge Snohomish PUD by FleetCarma

Kia Niro 2019 EV Wrap

Join Snohomish PUD-FleetCarma SmartCharge Study

Snohomish County PUD is partnering with FleetCarma to launch a two-year study to better understand electric vehicle use, charging patterns and other driving statistics.

Participants install a small device in the vehicle that collects and transmits vehicle information via a cellular connection. Data collected will be shared with participants in an individual personalized portal and will be used by FleetCarma and the PUD to better understand electric vehicles and charging impacts on the grid.

To be eligible, drivers must be Snohomish PUD customers, live year-round in Snohomish County or Camano Island, and own or lease a plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) or electric vehicle (EV) through September 2022. Qualified customers may be eligible for up to $185 over two years. The study will be limited to 100 participants.

What is the goal of the study?

Collecting Electric Vehicles (EV) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) driving and charging information in our service territory will allow the PUD to better understand the effect of EVs on its electric system. Results of the study will help the PUD better assist EV customers through potential new programs, education, and new services.

How will the study work?

The SmartCharge Snohomish PUD study will recruit 100 participants to install FleetCarma C2 devices in their EV or PHEV. FleetCarma C2 devices automatically collect and transmit driving and charging information via a cellular connection over the course of the study period. That data will be shared with participants in an individual personalized portal and then used by FleetCarma and the PUD to better understand EV charging impacts on the grid. The PUD and FleetCarma will not use participants' information for marketing and will not sell data. The study is limited to 100 participants who will be provided up to $185 in payments over two years.

When will the study happen?

The study period is two years. Customers need to participate for the entire study. The study starts in summer 2020.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible, customers must be a Snohomish PUD customer and live year-round in Snohomish County or Camano Island. They must also own or lease a plug-in electric vehicle – either a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or battery electric vehicle. Lease-term must go through September 2022.

What happens after registration?

Participants will first register at the study registration website. FleetCarma will review the application to confirm eligibility. If accepted, participants will receive a FleetCarma C2 with instructions for installation and how to activate the device. The device will be mailed to participants, who will be notified regarding their acceptance to the program.

What is FleetCarma?

FleetCarma is a connected car platform that collects driving and charging data for electric vehicles. The PUD is partnering with FleetCarma for this study.

What do participants receive?

Participating customers may receive up to $185 over the two years of the study. Payments are based on providing driving and charging data and off-peak charging in Year 2. Qualified participants will be able to redeem rewards for cash deposits into a PayPal account.

For participants who do not want to use PayPal, they will receive an Amazon card for the full amount of rewards earned at the end of the year.

What data is collected?

Via the C2 hardware device, FleetCarma will collect information about:

  • Charging session duration, energy consumption and location.
  • GPS charging location coordinates will be used to determine how much charging is occurring within the PUD's service territory. We only collect GPS information when you are charging, not when you are driving.
  • Trip duration, energy consumption and distance traveled.
  • When registering, personal information (such as name, email, vehicle type and home address) is collected. This information is not collected thorugh the C2 device.
  • The PUD and FleetCarma will not use participants' information for marketing and will not sell data.
Can I opt out of the study?

If participants move out of the PUD's service territory, sell their EV or wish to no longer be a part of the study, participants can notify FleetCarma Support by email to end their participation and for instructions on how to return the C2 device if it was never activated.
