A Few Simple Ways to Conserve Energy this Winter

As the temperatures outside get colder, thermostats can get bumped up – leading to higher energy bills in the winter months.
We usually see our highest usage during this time of year, and we work year-round so that we are prepared to meet your needs as temperatures drop. In addition, along with having an emergency kit for storm season, there are a few easy, cost-effective ways to help lower your winter energy consumption – and costs!
The simplest way to make a difference with your energy bill is to adjust your thermostat. The Department of Energy estimates that for every degree you lower the thermostat you can save about 3 percent on your energy bill. Don one of your stylish sweaters and use blankets to make up the difference.
It’s also important to unplug electronics. Even when powered off, devices can use “phantom” or “vampire” energy, which can add up over time.
Another big saver can be washing clothes in cold water. This can greatly reduce energy usage while doing laundry. In addition, if your water heater is set to above 120 degrees, lower it to that temperature. This energy tip is advised by state law to prevent scalding injuries. It may also help extend the life of your water heater by slowing mineral buildup and corrosion.
Finally, if you are looking for an extra easy way to conserve energy – and find a few products to help with your energy conservation goals – head over to the PUD Marketplace before it closes on Dec. 16.
