In 1998, the PUD executed a contract with Klickitat County PUD for energy from the H.W. Hill landfill gas power plant. The plant converts methane gas that is produced by 36 million tons of waste at the Roosevelt Regional Landfill into clean, renewable energy (one million tons of waste = 1 megawatt). The PUD's 5 megawatt purchase from this project was for 10 years (1999 through 2009). In November 2008, the PUD secured a second power purchase agreement for 2 megawatts that will expire in 2015.
