Homeschool Programs

Snohomish County PUD is proud to offer FREE classroom presentations about energy and energy conservation for Snohomish County and Camano Island homeschool students ages 9-13. We offer hands-on lessons in a traditional classroom setting that challenge students to investigate electrical circuits, energy resources, energy transformations and thermal flow. Homeschool programs are held at our headquarters building in Everett.

**Students must be pre-registered and between the ages of 9 and 13 on the day of class in order to participate.  Registrations are first-come, first-served.

8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Insulation Station: In this lesson, each student builds a cardboard pre-fab house and insulates it with different amounts of cotton batting. Each house receives a hot water bottle to act as a furnace. Houses are sealed, and the students take temperature readings, graph their results and interpret data, and draw conclusions about the importance of insulation in making a home energy efficient. The discussion and graphing easily integrate the activity into both social studies and mathematics; or it can be used as an introduction or a reinforcement of the use of the scientific method. This activity addresses Science GLE 1.2.2 with an emphasis on heat energy transfer. (This lesson was offered in the fall ’08 homeschool program.)

Monday, September 21, 2009
8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Watt Do You Know about Energy?:  This interactive lesson covers the basics of what energy is, the sources of energy, and the differences between renewable and nonrenewable energy. Students will make their own "watt-o-meter" to measure their personal energy consumption and brainstorm actions that will result in ways they can personally conserve. This is a great introduction lesson to energy and addresses Science GLE 1.1.4.

Energy Detectives: In small groups, students will look for "clues" and "evidence" of how energy is used in their own classroom. With the help of a "draft-o-meter" and thermometer, students conduct an energy audit and determine how they use energy in their classroom.

Monday, September 28, 2009
8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

*Students must attend the September 21st classes in order to participate in these classes.

Energy Choices Game:  In small groups, students will play a board game that helps them understand how small everyday choices affect their personal energy consumption. Students make choices about how much energy to use as they move through the game. In the end, students will find out if they are savers or spenders of energy and discuss what kinds of actions will make a difference in their energy use.

Making Cents of Lighting Choices:  Students compare three lighting choices – incandescent, compact fluorescent, and light-emitting diode – and determine which lighting choice is the most efficient for use in today's homes. Activities are math-intensive as students investigate the specifics of each lighting source including watts, lumens, life expectancy, and cost.

PUD Education Program Age Requirements: Please be mindful of the age requirement specified above. For example, if your student is seven-years-old but studying at the level of an average nine-year-old student, we require that you wait until your student turns nine before he or she participates in this program. Our age requirements are based on safety factors as well as curriculum content. Thank you for understanding and respecting this requirement.
